How to cross-list Canvas courses

Updated on

Introduction

Cross-listing Canvas courses involves combining enrollments from two or more courses into one Canvas course in which all content is managed.  The first step in cross-listing involves choosing a course as the Parent course. This will contain all the content for the cross-listed courses.  A course that is cross-listed into the Parent Course is called the Child Course.

Please consider the following before cross-listing your courses:

  • If your classes show as meeting with each other according to the class schedule, please do not cross-list them; these courses will automatically cross-list with each other.

  • All students will see the title of the parent course in their Canvas dashboard, which may appear different than the class in which they are enrolled.

  • Cross-listed courses share identical content, assignments, and grading weights.

  • Do not cross-list courses that already contain student submissions and grades. If a course is cross-listed after submissions are made they will disappear.

  • All students from all cross-listed courses can interact in the content course.

1. Access your chosen parent course which contains all course content and publish it

Only cross-list to a published parent course. Cross-listing to an unpublished parent course will result in an auto de-crosslisting when the university's automatic cross-listing process updates every hour.

2. Copy the parent course ID

Select the course ID number in the URL of the parent course and copy it (CTRL + C).

3. Select a course that will be cross-listed to the parent course

Access a course to cross-list to the parent course.

4. Click Settings on the bottom of the course navigation menu

Access Settings on the bottom left side of the course that will be cross-listed into the main course.

5. Access the course sections

Click on the Sections tab [1] in Settings and click on the class title [2] under Course sections.

6. Select "Cross-List this Section"

From the course section settings, select "Cross-list this Section" on the right side of the page.

7. Enter the main content course ID

Paste (CTLR + V) the parent course ID from Step 2 in designated area [1].  After entering the course ID, make sure the parent course appears under Selected Course [2] and select "Cross-List This Section" [3].

8. Verifying correct courses have been cross-listed

You will be taken to the parent course, which contains all content and enrollments from both courses, immediately after you cross-list the child course to the parent course.
