How to Use the RCE Icon Maker

Introduction

The RCE Icon Maker gives you the ability to create, edit and remove icons in your Canvas course.  You can choose from Instructure’s predefined images or upload your own to create icons in the Rich Content Editor. You also have the ability to edit or remove any icons you create. The Rich Content Editor is available in Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Classic Quizzes, and the Syllabus sections of your Canvas course.

1. Select Create Icon Maker Icon

Click drop-down shown below [1] and select Create Icon Maker Icon [2]

2. Enter Icon Name and Alt Text

Type the Name [1] icon, which is for organization, selection, and reuse in the future, and type the Alt Text [2], which is for students who use screen readers.

3. Select Icon Shape and Icon Size

Use the Icon Shape drop-down [1] to select the shape of the icon you are creating.  You can select square, circle, triangle, diamond, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, and star shapes.

Use the Icon Size drop-down [2].  You can select extra small, small, medium or large.

4. Select Icon Color, Outline Size and Outline Color

To change the icon color, use the Icon Color drop-down [1].  

To change the outline to the icon, use Outline Size drop-down [2]  You can select none if you don't want an outline, or select small, medium or large.

To change the color of the outline to the icon, use the Outline Color drop-down [3]

5. Enter text, text size, text color, text background color and text position

Adding text can act as a label or name for the icon, making it clear what the icon represents.  Enter the Text [1] you would like to include with your icon.

Select the Text Size [2], Text Color [3], Text Background Color [4] and Text Position [5] that best fit your icon requirements

6. Add Image

To add an image to your icon, click the Add Image drop-down menu [1]

You can upload your own image [2], add an Instructure predefined single color image [3], add an Instructure predefined multi color image [4], or add an image from your course files [5].

7. Crop Image

To change the shape, click the Shape drop-down menu [1].

To change the orientation, enter a number in the Rotation field or use the Rotation buttons [2].

To change the size, enter a number in the Percent field or use the Magnifying Glass buttons [3].

To reset the uploaded image, click the Reset button [4].

To save your changes, click the Save button [5].

8. Save icon

Click Apply [1] to save your created icon.

9. Adding a saved icon you created

In the Rich Content Editor, click the Icon Maker [1] and select Saved Icon Maker Icons [2]. This will open a panel giving you the option to select your icon. Remember, the RCE is available in the Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Classic Quizzes and Syllabus sections of your Canvas course.
