Canvas Theme

Canvas users will notice new fonts and colors in Canvas that are consistent with branding and web accessibility guidelines from University Marketing & Communications. There may be additional updates to buttons, accordion panels, tabs, icons, and content expanders.

The functionality and navigation of the system will not change.

Cidi Lab's DesignPLUS

Cidi Lab's Design Tools will now default to the a new version, DesignPLUS, which has been configured to reflect the University of Utah's updated branding guidlines.

DesignPLUS is a time-saving, easy-to-use Canvas plug-in that helps you rapidly build and style high-quality courses that make learning engaging and accessible for all students.

While DesignPLUS will now be set as the default in Canvas, the legacy version will still be available for use for those who need it.

Legacy Design Tools can be enabled by using the keyboard shortcut Alt/Option+Shift+D after choosing the Design Tools icon in the top right corner of any "Edit" page in your Canvas Course.

Canvas Features

Automated Cross-Listing

On May 1st, a process will run that will cross-list Canvas classes that correspond with combined classes in PeopleSoft. Things to know:

  • The class with the largest enrollment cap will become the course that contains the course content (“Parent” course).
  • Classes that are published before May 1st will not be affected or changed by this process.
  • Classes that are cross-listed, unpublished, and do not have a corresponding combined set in PeopleSoft will be uncross-listed.
Inbox Signature Block

Users have the option to configure a signature when composing a message. This feature streamlines communication and enhances the effectiveness and professional appeal of inbox messages.

Inbox Auto Response

Users have the option to set an auto-response for Canvas Inbox messages. This feature streamlines communication and enhances the effectiveness and professional appeal of inbox messages.

Schedule Page Publication

Allows instructors to prepare and schedule pages in advance to automatically publish in a course.

RCE Icon Maker

Instructors can use Instructure predefined images or upload their own custom images to make icons within the Rich Content Editor.

Emojis in Submission Comments

When adding submission comments, instructors and students can add emojis using the Emoji Picker.

Submission Stickers

The Submission Stickers feature option allows instructors to add stickers to individual and group assignment submissions per attempt, offering an engaging way to provide feedback.

Instructors can apply stickers through the Traditional Gradebook tray, Individual Gradebook, and SpeedGrader.

Canvas Learning Tools

Canvas Learning Tools (LTIs and Applications) are third-party programs built in house or by other organizations that can be installed in Canvas.

After installation, access is governed by the LTI's functionality but most can be enabled though course navigation settings.

Simple Syllabus

Coming Fall 2025. In accordance with House Bill 261 (HB 261), instructors at public institutions of higher education are legally required to make their syllabi accessible to the public. The University of Utah has purchased Simple Syllabus to help streamline this process. The Syllabus tab in Canvas course navigation will be replaced with a link to the Simple Syllabus program where students can access the necessary material.

Poll Everywhere transforms presentations into interactive conversations, empowering audiences to share real-time feedback through dynamic, live responses.

Feedback Fruits

FeedbackFruits is an integrated LMS tool suite to create and scale engaging learning experiences. Included are tools for assessment, feedback, social annotation, polling, engagement and interaction.

How to Request Learning Tool

The University of Utah has licensed many LTIs that are available to Canvas users university wide. Some LTIs, which are not licensed University wide, are only available to certain individuals and departments.

To request installation of an LTI, please fill out the LTI Request Form.
