Auto-cross-listed courses

Updated on

Introduction

Cross-listing Canvas courses involves combining enrollments from two or more courses into one Canvas course in which all content is managed.  Canvas courses are auto-cross-listed when classes are scheduled to meet together in the same classroom and for all online courses with sections 090 and 290.

Auto-cross-listing Canvas courses involves the auto-selection of a Parent course, which is the course that will contain all content for the cross-listed courses.  A course that is cross-listed into the Parent Course is called the Child Course.

All students will see the title of the parent course in their Canvas dashboard, which may appear different than the class in which they are enrolled.

If your classes share the same content but do not meet in the same classroom, and you would like to cross-list them, or if would like like to cross-list online courses that are not section 090 or 290 courses, please visit How to cross-list Canvas courses.

Below is a list of class types that auto-cross-list and the criteria for selecting parent courses in the auto-cross-listing process.

Auto-cross-listing online courses

A section 090 course serves as the parent course when section 290 is automatically cross-listed with it.  All students in both sections will see the title of the section 090 course in their Canvas Dashboard.

Auto-cross-listing by subject

Canvas courses auto-cross-listed by subject are sorted alphabetically. For instance, if a surgery course is auto-cross-listed with a nursing course, the nursing course would be designated as the parent.

Auto-cross-listing by catalog number

When multiple courses share a subject, the one with the higher catalog number is designated the parent. For example, if WRTG 1010-001 and 101-001 are auto-cross-listed, the 1010-001 course serves as the parent.

Auto-cross-listing by section number

When two or more courses share the same subject and catalog numbers, the course with the lower section number is designated as the parent course.  For example, if a section 002 course cross-listed with a section 001 course, section 001 will become the parent course.

Auto-cross-listing by career

The career courses below will become the parent course based in the following order.

1. Dentistry
2. Medicine
3. Law

Below are a few examples:

If a Dentistry course cross-lists with any other career course, the Denistry course will become the parent course.   If a Pharmacy course cross-lists with a Medicine course, the Medicine course will become the parent course
