How to upgrade from original Design Tools pages to DesignPLUS design elements?

Introduction

After December 2025, the Legacy Sidebar will no longer be updated. You can still use the Legacy interface, but please note that Cidilabs will not provide fixes for any issues that may arise from future Canvas updates. We encourage you to begin transitioning to DesignPLUS to take advantage of its streamlined workflow, enhanced accessibility features and flexible content tools.

To review these steps, please watch this quick video or follow the steps below: 

1. Access your Canvas course.

2. Canvas course settings.

Click on Settings [1] in the navigations.

3. Rocket ship icon

Click on the rocket ship icon [1] on the upper-right side.

4. Course Upgrade.

Click on Course Upgrade [1].

5. Scan Course button

Click on the Scan Course button [1].

6. Review Items

Click on the Review Items button [1].

Course Scan Results shows you the number of pages, assignments, discussions and announcements containing old Legacy design elements, and shows whether or not the Canvas syllabus also contains legacy design elements. It will also display the total items that can upgraded from Legacy to DesignPLUS.

7. Review Item for each title.

Click on Review Item [1] for each title.

8. Upgraded Content Preview tab. 

To examine the changes made and approve the upgrade, select the Upgraded Content Preview tab [1].

9. Original Content Preview

Select the Original Content Preview [1], if you would like to compare it to the Upgrade Content Preview [2].

After you click Approve Upgrade, DesignPLUS automatically moves to the next item in the list.

To return to the list instead, clear the Continue to the next item after approval checkbox [3] below the Approve Upgrade button.

10. Edit in New Tab button.

If you discover that you need to edit a page, select Edit in New Tab [1].
