Recovering Deactivated Videos

Updated on

Why has my video been deactivated?

Per DLT's media retention policy, videos that are 2 years old and have no plays are flagged for deactivation. Please note that a “deactivated” video is different than one that has been flagged for deletion.  All videos uploaded to the Kaltura system receive a set of associated video “flavors”. These enable adaptive streaming so the quality of video adjusts to the user’s internet connection speed to ensure smooth playback. When a video is deactivated, all of the video’s flavors are removed, but the source video file is retained. Video owners will still see deactivated videos in their My Media and can restore the video’s flavors if needed by following the steps outlined below.

Videos that are 7 years old with no plays meet the criteria for deletion. Videos that are flagged for deletion are fully deleted and cannot be restored.

How can I prevent my videos from being deactivated?

  1. Play the videos often. Only videos that have not been played for 2 or more years may be deactivated.
  2. For long-term archiving purposes, it is recommended to keep a copy of important videos backed up on your device. Videos can be downloaded to your device by following these linked instructions.

What do I do if my video is deactivated?

If you would like to recover a recently deactivated video, most can be restored by following the steps below:

1. Go to mediaspace.utah.edu and click the "Login" button

2. Enter your UNID, campus password, and complete DUO authentication

3. [1] Click your name and [2] select "My Media" from the drop-down menu

4. Click the "Pencil" icon on the video you want to restore

5. [1] Click on the Transcoding tab, then [2] click the green Reconvert all flavors button.

Once reconverting is complete, the video will be playable.
