ChatGPT Edu is the University of Utahs secure version of ChatGPT for teaching, learning, and work. This guide shows you how to request access, accept your invitation email, and sign in using University of Utah single sign-on (SSO).
Step 1: Request a ChatGPT Edu license
To get started, you'll need to request a ChatGPT Edu license through University IT.
- Go to the ChatGPT Edu license request form.
- Submit the request using your University of Utah information.
Important: You'll first receive a confirmation email from U of U IT Services with the subject line ChatGPT Enterprise EDU Access. This email confirms your license request, it does not give you access yet.
To access ChatGPT Edu, you must select Join workspace in the separate invitation email from OpenAI (covered in the next step).
Step 2: Watch for the invitation email (usually sent within 24 hours)
After your license is activated (usually within 24 hours), check your inbox for an email from OpenAI inviting you to the ChatGPT Edu workspace.
- If you don't see the email within 24 hours, check your spam or junk folder.
- The email subject will reference ChatGPT Edu or joining a workspace.
Step 3: Accept the invitation and finish account setup
When you receive the invitation email:
1. Open the email and select Join workspace [1].
2. Select Sign up for free.
3. Create your account using your [email protected] email address. Do not use [email protected] or your [email protected] email.

4. Select Continue.
5. When prompted, choose University of Utah ChatGPT EDU [2].
Step 4: Sign in to ChatGPT Edu (now and in the future)
Now that your account is set up, use these steps anytime you need to log in to ChatGPT Edu.
- Go to chatgpt.com and bookmark the page for quick access in the future.
- Select Log in.
- Enter your [email protected] email address.
- When prompted, sign in using University of Utah single sign-on (SSO):
- Enter your uNID and password.
- Complete Duo two-factor authentication.
After successful authentication, you'll be redirected to ChatGPT Edu [3] and can begin using the service.
If you don't receive your invitation from OpenAI within 24 hours or run into issues signing in, submit a help request with University IT support.
