Introduction

Cross-listing Canvas courses involves combining enrollments from two or more courses into one Canvas course in which all content is managed.

Instructors select a content course before cross-listing.  The content course is the course that contains or will contain all content for all courses that will cross-list to it.

You can cross-list Canvas courses for classes that do not meet with other according to the U of U class schedule, but please make sure cross-listing is right for you.

Is cross-listing for you?

If you cross-listed courses in the past, will you be managing your courses differently?

For an example of managing courses differently, you would like to apply a variety of grade weights or have distinct assignments between courses.

Would you like your courses to share identical content, assignments, and grading weights?

Cross-listed courses share identical content so it is only recommended if the courses are meant to be identical. Continue to the next consideration.

Are the courses you would like to cross-list unpublished or do not have student submissions?

Cross-list courses before publishing.  Doing so will prevent lost student assignment submissions and grades that might occur if you were to publish your courses first. Continue to the next consideration.

All students will see the title of the main course in their Canvas dashboard, which may appear different than the class to which they are enrolled. Do you wish to continue?

Cross-listing is recommended

All students see the title of the content course in their Canvas Dashboard, and all course names cross-listed to the content course do not appear in the Canvas Dashboard. We recommend posting an announcement about this. Doing so will send an email notification to your students. Reach out to [email protected] if you need assistance.

Do you accept that students from all cross-listed courses can interact across courses?
